Popular pizza chain Pizza Hut is facing backlash after it allegedly promoted a book that “celebrates drag kids.”
Some people online are calling for a boycott of Pizza Hut after the restaurant displayed “Big Wig,” a book celebrating “drag kids,” as part of its reading incentive program “Book It!” The book, which is targeted toward children in pre-K and up to third great, was featured in celebration of Pride Month.
On the “Book It!” website, “Big Wig” is described as a “wonderful read-aloud” book that “celebrates the universal childhood experience of dressing up and the confidence that comes with putting on a costume,” Fox News reports.
It didn’t take long for people to take issue with the book online.
“Boycott Pizza Hut, order from Papa John’s instead. Better ingredients. Better pizza. No wokeness,” one person tweeted.
“Pizza Hut’s ‘Book It’ reading program features a book titled ‘Big Wig,’ which is a story about children who dress in drag, and is geared toward kids as young as kindergarten. Another business who caved – and another one on my ‘banned’ list! F U Pizza Hut!” said another Twitter user.
On the opposite end, some praised the food chain for featuring the book.
“Pizza Hut’s Book It! reading challenge is encouraging kids to read BIG WIG. The book is about a kid dressing in drag for a costume contest. These books celebrate acceptance, inclusivity & self-confidence,” wrote a Twitter user.
Should we boycott @pizzahut? https://t.co/epZ8yaaYtK
