Pope Francis has officially granted approval for priests to offer blessings to same-sex couples.
Through a newly issued document, Pope Francis elucidated a significant shift in Vatican policy, emphasizing that individuals searching for God’s love and mercy should not be required to undergo a thorough moral examination.
“One should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing,” the document read.
The recently released document expands upon a letter Pope Francis sent to two conservative cardinals. In that initial response, Francis indicated that blessings for same-sex couples could be considered in certain situations as long as they didn’t blur the distinction between the ritual and the sacrament of marriage.
The document reiterates and expands upon this reasoning, emphasizing the enduring sacrament of marriage as a lifelong union between a man and a woman. It underscores that blessings must not coincide with a civil union nor mimic the attire and actions associated with a wedding. However, it asserts that requests for such blessings should not be outright denied.
The document provides a comprehensive interpretation of the term “blessing” in Scripture, emphasizing that individuals seeking a transcendent connection with God and in pursuit of His love and mercy should not be obligated to undergo a detailed moral examination as a prerequisite for receiving it.
Nevertheless, The Vatican maintains the view that marriage constitutes an indissoluble bond between a man and a woman, and consequently, it has consistently opposed same-sex marriage. In 2021, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith explicitly stated that the Church could not bestow blessings on the unions of two men or two women, asserting that such blessings were incompatible with the belief that “God cannot bless sin.”
