As ASAP Rocky’s firearm assault trial gets underway, jurors are being asked about their Fenty shopping habits.
Potential jurors are facing questions not only about their knowledge of the New York rapper but also of Rihanna, the mother of his children. This week, the prosecution queried whether jurors were familiar with the couple’s music or had ever purchased products from Rihanna’s Fenty brand, such as makeup or clothing. Additionally, they asked if jurors could remain impartial should Rihanna make an appearance in the courtroom.
The case stems from allegations that the “Peso” performer fired a semiautomatic weapon at his former friend, Terell Ephron, also known as ASAP Relli. Despite rejecting a plea deal that included a 180-day jail sentence and three years of probation, Rocky now faces up to 24 years in prison if convicted.
Reverend Al Sharpton has criticized the jury selection process, citing racial disparities. “It is absolutely ridiculous that the jury will not be fair and representative,” he wrote on Twitter. Sharpton highlighted that only four of the 106 potential jurors were Black, with none among the first 30 candidates.
Rocky’s relationship with Rihanna has also surfaced in court proceedings. Earlier this month, a judge questioned him about their personal life, including their two children. It’s unknown if the entrepreneur will make an appearance during his trial, though given the high-profile nature of his case, Rihanna may steer clear altogether.
