President Joe Biden continues to address the student loan crisis, announcing today that 55,000 more public service workers have been approved for student debt cancellation. This brings the total number of borrowers receiving relief under his administration to nearly 5 million.

The 55,000 public servants approved for debt cancellation today are workers who have dedicated their lives to giving back to their communities.

The latest round of debt forgiveness benefits teachers, nurses, law enforcement officials, service members, and other public service workers. These individuals are finally receiving the debt relief they are entitled to under existing programs, fulfilling Biden’s promise to support those who dedicate their lives to serving their communities.

In his statement, President Biden emphasized his administration’s commitment to making higher education a pathway to success, not a financial burden. “From Day One of my Administration, I promised to make sure that higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity,” he said.

Over the past four years, the Biden administration has taken significant steps to support students and borrowers:

  • Pell Grant Expansion: Secured the largest increase to the maximum Pell Grant award in more than a decade.
  • Accountability: Held educational institutions accountable for exploiting students.
  • Fixing Broken Programs: Repaired programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) to ensure they work as intended.

The president noted the profound impact of these changes, highlighting how millions of Americans can now take steps toward financial independence. “Because of our actions, millions of people across the country now have the breathing room to start businesses, save for retirement, and pursue life plans they had to put on hold because of the burden of student loan debt,” Biden stated.

This milestone reflects the administration’s ongoing efforts to ease the financial strain on borrowers, particularly those in the public service sector, who often face challenges balancing their critical work with student debt obligations.
