Days after the Carver County Sheriff’s office released an audio interview with Irish singer, Sinead O’Connor, about Prince, his ex-wife Mayte Garcia has stepped up to defend his honor.

In the interview, the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer asserted that Prince would frequently abuse drugs and presented violent behavior as a result. “He had been extremely violent to a number of women in his life, including myself. Several women were put in the hospital while poor Prince was under the effects of these medications,” she said.

But now, Garcia is refuting O’Connor’s recent allegations against Prince and demands to let him rest in peace. Throughout her marriage to the musical icon— from 1996 to 2000—, Garcia says she never experienced Prince turning violent toward her or anyone in general nor did she see him take any hard drugs. “I only seen him drunk once,” she told Carver County Sheriffs.

Garcia also denied O’Connor’s claims that her former husband took part in “devil worship,” calling that assertion “ridiculously wrong.”

Documents and video released by the Carver County Sheriff’s Office last week shed a light on Prince’s struggles in the days leading up to his death. A video showed Prince entering and later leaving, a medical clinic one day before he died from an accidental fentanyl overdose.
