A Houston high school principal is in hot water for making comments that both students and parents found racist.
“You got people taking pictures posing like they’re from — Dr. Dre from the 90s. Doesn’t make our school look good,” Oak Ridge High School principal, Anthony LiVechhi, said in a video captured by students.
The comments came during the school’s throwback ‘90s event on Thursday. Students told KPRC2 that LiVechhi’s remarks were not complementary, and they were upset.
“The analogy of comparing us to Dr. Dre was used to bring us down and to degrade the way we were dressing and to degrade our school spirit and our 90s day,” student Nia Dixon told the outlet.
Dr. Dre is a Grammy-award-winning rapper and producer that rose to fame in the ‘90s. It was announced that he would be a part of this year’s Super Bowl Halftime show the same day LiVechhi made the disparaging remarks.
On Monday, LiVechhi apologized for his remarks. “I love you all. That’s not how you need to be treated. It won’t happen again,” he said in a recorded cell phone video. The comments came after a peaceful protest was held at the school.
