Wu-Tang Clan legend Raekwon was supposed to be celebrating his new album “Emperor’s New Clothes,” but instead he’s caught in a legal mess after his cannabis dispensary, HashStoria, was forced to close its doors.
Court documents show a judge ruled in favor of the building’s landlord, BMHC LLC, ordering HashStoria to vacate the Newark property. The storefront has been empty and inactive. According to the landlord, Raekwon’s team was given time to resolve the rent issue after their 2024 grand opening, but never did.
Raekwon sees it very differently.
“We were hoodwinked, and while it’s a very sad outcome, we will have our day in court,” he said.
HashStoria’s representatives allege that an agreement had been made to pause or prorate rent while the building underwent prolonged renovations and permitting delays tied to the City of Newark. They say the landlord approved this pause due to zero revenue during that time.
HashStoria also claims the landlord allowed an unlicensed dispensary to open next door, which was repeatedly raided by law enforcement. The presence of that illegal shop, they say, created major problems for their brand and forced them to market their business with the slogan “Legal AF” to distance themselves.
“Our million-dollar operation was poisoned,” said the rep, adding that HashStoria was marketed as a Black-owned enterprise but faced systemic hurdles. “Communities aren’t owned by people of color, and we constantly deal with red tape.”
Despite the shutdown, HashStoria’s staff is still receiving pay through their vacation days, but the future of the business remains uncertain. Meanwhile, BMHC is reportedly fielding new offers from other dispensary operators interested in the property.
While the courtroom battle heats up, Raekwon is keeping it moving musically. He’s back in the studio linking with Nas, Griselda, and the rest of Wu-Tang for upcoming projects.
