If you were a 90s kid, you probably remember the excitement of handing your BOOK IT! certificate to the Pizza Hut cashier and proudly walking out with your very own Personal Pan Pizza. Now, Pizza Hut is bringing that same joy to a whole new generation, only this time, it’s digital.
For the first time in BOOK IT!’s 40-year history, Pizza Hut has launched the BOOK IT! app, giving today’s parents and kids a way to track summer reading goals and earn free pizza—all from a smartphone.
The new app, which quietly dropped this month, is part of Pizza Hut’s revamped “BOOK IT! Summer of Stories” campaign. Just like the old-school version, kids from Pre-K through 6th grade can set reading goals and earn a free Personal Pan Pizza for each month they complete—June, July, and August.
This time around, everything happens inside the app. Parents can set custom goals, monitor their child’s reading progress, and make sure the kids stay on track during the long school break. And it’s not just about rewards—it’s also about stopping the “Summer Slide,” a learning loss that can set kids back nearly two years by the time they reach middle school.
“BOOK IT! has inspired a love for reading in millions of children since 1984,” said Lucila Cuello, Pizza Hut U.S. Chief People and Culture Officer. “Now, with the launch of the BOOK IT! app, we’re making it even easier for parents to connect with their kids and inspire plenty of fun, pizza-filled memories.”
For the nostalgic adults who once read chapter books just to snag that hot cheesy prize, this new era of BOOK IT! is a full-circle moment. And for today’s young readers, it’s a sweet way to combine screen time with story time.
To get in on the action, families can download the BOOK IT! app from their favorite app store and set a June reading goal by June 1. From there, every page turned brings your child one step closer to pizza—and a lifelong love of reading.
