A Republican lawmaker who advocated for keeping kids away from drag shows has resigned after having a sexual relationship with his teenage intern.
Texas Rep. Bryan Slaton wasted no time stepping down on Monday, just two days after the House General Investigative Committee unveiled a 16-page report summarizing his inappropriate affair with the 19-year-old. Slaton is 45 and married. However, that didn’t stop him from providing the aide with enough alcohol to get them drunk prior to their encounter, despite the teen being under the legal drinking age. His attorney called the allegations “outrageous” when they first surfaced last year.
Slaton’s resignation came just before the Texas House voted unanimously on Tuesday to expel him. In his resignation announcement, Slaton didn’t take accountability for his actions or acknowledge them in any way, for that matter. Instead, he thanked his supporters and said it has “been an honor” to serve House District 2.
Slaton is well known for introducing several far-right bills. One of his most controversial proposals is a tax cut for those who identify as heterosexuals. Another that has garnered nationwide attention is his “anti-grooming” law that looks to stop kids from attending drag shows with parents. Last year when he announced this bill, he claimed it was meant to protect children from over-sexualization.
It’s unclear how long Slaton had been engaging in the sexual relationship with his subordinate.
