A Royal Caribbean crew member tragically died after falling overboard from the Icon of the Seas while en route to Coco Cay, Bahamas. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th.
In a statement to PEOPLE, a cruise line spokesperson shared, “Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately, the crew member passed away.” The spokesperson added, “We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.”
Witnesses say the crew member fell from the port side of the ship. The crew quickly deployed life preservers to pinpoint the location and activated emergency protocols, slowing the vessel and turning back to assist.
A rescue boat retrieved the man and brought him aboard a dinghy, but he was pronounced dead shortly after, WSVN reported.
Despite the tragedy, the cruise will continue its scheduled voyage and return to Miami by Saturday, July 26th.
