Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller Sinners is officially a box office beast. The film, which features Michael B. Jordan in a standout double role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, just passed the $300 million mark at the global box office, making it one of the year’s biggest wins.
According to Warner Bros., the film earned $4.4 million in the U.S. and $1.2 million internationally on Friday, May 16 alone. That brings its global total to $303.5 million, all in just under five weeks since its debut on April 18. It’s only the fourth movie this year to break that barrier—joining Captain America: Brave New World, A Minecraft Movie, and Ne Zha 2.
Sinners is more than just a hit—it’s making horror history. With a reported production budget between $90 and $100 million, the film needed to clear at least $250 million to break even after factoring in marketing and theater splits. It didn’t just reach that—it soared past it, officially entering profit territory.
The film made waves early with a record-breaking Easter opening for an R-rated movie and boasted the second-smallest second-weekend drop for an R-rated title behind Heart Eyes. And now, Sinners holds the title of Ryan Coogler’s highest-grossing movie outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For a genre that often struggles to perform at blockbuster levels, Sinners is a major win. It proves that with the right story, cast, and director, horror can thrive in the big leagues—and rake in big dollars.
