On Friday, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne tested negative for COVID-19 for the second day in a row after testing positive on Wednesday.
Bourne, along with fellow wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, and left tackle Trent Williams were all barred from playing in Thursday nights game against the Green Bay Packers. Without three vital players, the 49ers suffered a 34-17 loss.
What is more upsetting is that Bourne likely tested positive for the virus due to a rare false-positive test.
“I know it’s frustrating, but it is what it is,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “That’s what everyone in this world’s got to deal with right now. They’re doing that for the safety. Unfortunately, it wasn’t necessary, but I get why it did happen. So, got to deal with it and we obviously dealt with that last night. So, hopefully it won’t happen going forward.”
In addition to the players who could not play due to COVID-19 concerns, the team is also dealing with a long list of players who are currently out due to injuries.
“That’s the most frustrating part, we know that we can be so much better,” backup quarterback Nick Mullens said. “Even with the guys that we had on the field, myself included. We really feel like we can be a lot better and so with these couple of days away, just regroup, reset, and just foot on the gas for these upcoming weeks.”
Bourne, Aiyuk, Samuel, and Williams will return to the field in the team’s next game on November 15th against the News Orleans Saints.
