An alleged threat made on TikTok compelled schools around the country to cancel classes in an effort to keep students safe.
Threats of shootings and bombings that were supposedly set to take place on Friday, December 17, were allegedly made on the popular social media app TikTok. In response, schools in several states closed down class out of fear of the threats being true, The Verge reports. Missouri, Texas, California and Minnesota were just some of the states in the country that closed up class.
The news outlet reports that there has yet to be any evidence that confirms the rumors as true. And there is no information on what schools may have been targeted. After looking into the threats, even law officials say that nothing was found to be credible evidence.
“Law enforcement agencies have investigated this threat and determined that it originated in Arizona and is not credible,” Baltimore County Public Schools wrote in a Twitter post. A Missouri school district also sent out a statement on the social media platform, saying, “Currently, there have been no threats to any of the schools in Mexico, [Missouri].”
Some of the alleged videos reportedly warn people against attending school on December 17. Following the alleged posts, more posts have come about reinforcing the message of the threats on the basis of some schools being shut down over the matter. In a statement, TikTok said it has not been able to find any traces of evidence that would support the claims.
“We have not found evidence of such threats originating or spreading via TikTok,” the company wrote on Twitter this past Thursday. It added that it is working with law enforcement to set things straight. “We handle even rumored threats with utmost seriousness, which is why we’re working with law enforcement to look into warnings about potential violence at schools even though we have not found evidence of such threats originating or spreading via TikTok,” reads TikTok’s post.
