Sean Kingston won’t be sharing sentencing day with his mother, even though she tried to make that happen.
According to All Hip-Hop, Janice Turner, the singer’s 61-year-old mother and co-defendant in a major federal fraud case, asked the court to move her sentencing to August 15th, the same day her son is due in court. But U.S. District Judge David S. Leibowitz said no, despite no objections from prosecutors or the probation office.
Turner’s sentencing remains set for July 11th at 9 a.m. She was convicted on March 28th for helping Kingston run a luxury goods scam that played off his celebrity image. According to court docs obtained by the outlet, the mother-son duo posed as wealthy buyers and used Kingston’s celebrity status to convince vendors to hand over expensive goods without upfront payment.
Their fraudulent run included a $285,000 jewelry purchase, a $150,000 home theater system reportedly tied to a bogus Justin Bieber promotion, an $86,000 custom luxury bed, and a $160,000 bulletproof Escalade. They also pulled in over $300,000 in fraudulent gains from Bank of America and First Republic Bank.
The scheme ran from April 2023 to March 2024. Turner allegedly handled logistics and sent fake wire transfer confirmations while Kingston served as the recognizable face.
Due to a prior bank fraud conviction in 2006, Turner was taken into custody immediately after the verdict. Kingston, on the other hand, is under house arrest with an ankle monitor.
Both now await sentencing, facing up to 20 years behind bars. For Turner, the clock starts ticking on July 11th.
