Shawn Mendes is getting slammed for how he personally responded to a fan during a recent pre-show Q&A session. An African-American fan was eager to know why Mendes had never addressed his “hurtful insensitive tweets” that were previously posted on his account.
In turn, Shawn said: “I didn’t mean to not acknowledge it. I just think that a lot of things need to be moved on from. But also I had friends when I was like 14, who would take my phone and post things of them and they thought it was funny that I had 2,000 followers at the time, I was just not thinking about it. I had no idea I was going to have 50 million followers. It doesn’t make it any better. But I apologize for everything insensitive that I said in the past, that’s not my personality,” he responded. The fan concluded her question, “Also, I have a black lives matter flag that I might throw on stage, so please catch it.” Mendes shouted back, “Throw that at me!”
Back in 2012 and 2013, the now 21-year-old singer allegedly made offensive racist remarks in some now-deleted tweets, where he described his hair as an “afro” and used the n-word. Then, in February 2019, he came under fire for “accidentally” liking a Tweet which made fun of transgender people.
Mendes’ girlfriends and singer Camilla Cabello is also getting dragged on Twitter for her alleged history of racist comments. Especially in light of her former Fifth Harmony bandmate, Normani’s new single, ‘Motivation.’
On the contrary, some fans are defending Shawn and Camila saying that they have done enough to prove they’re not racist or colorist and people who are still upset need to learn how to relax.
