Sherrone Moore’s tenure at Michigan ended with a crash, but his legal battle is just heating up. On Thursday, the former head coach made his way back into an Ann Arbor courtroom, and he didn’t come alone. Moore was joined by his wife, Kelli, in a clear show of solidarity as he faces serious felony charges that have effectively turned his $5.6 million-a-year career into a cautionary tale.
The fallout began in December when the university cut ties with Moore after uncovering what they called “credible evidence” of a secret relationship with another staff member. The situation allegedly spiraled into a scene straight out of a thriller just hours after he was fired. Prosecutors claim a distraught Moore showed up at the woman’s home on December 8, barged in, and grabbed butter knives and kitchen scissors from a drawer while screaming that she had “ruined his life.”
While the details of his brandishing the weapons and threatening self-harm sound intense, Moore’s lawyer, Ellen Michaels, says the whole story is a reach.
“Sherrone Moore is innocent of these charges. Today, on behalf of Mr. Moore, we filed a motion to quash the arrest warrant and dismiss the complaint,” Michaels told reporters. She claims the warrant was signed off based on “false and misleading statements” and is pushing to have the case thrown out before it even gains more steam.
The defense seems to be leaning heavily into the idea that the “truth will come out” once people are under oath, especially regarding the credibility of the staffer, who reportedly still works at UM. Despite the drama involving another woman, Moore’s wife has remained by his side, even as he navigates the embarrassment of wearing a court-ordered GPS tracker.
With his reputation in the gutter and his massive salary a thing of the past, Moore is now pinned down by a February 17 hearing date. If the motion to dismiss fails, the man who was once the face of the Wolverines will have to prepare for a trial that could put him behind bars for a very long time.
