Singer Sinead O’Connor has died at the age of 56.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” her family confirmed in a statement to RTE. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
The Dublin performer first rose to fame with her rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards. Throughout her career, she released ten studio albums, with the latest being 2014’s I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss.
In January 2022, O’Conner suffered the heartbreaking loss of her 17-year-old son Shane, who she said, “decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.”
A cause of death has not been revealed at this present time. However, O’Connor has been vocal about her mental health struggles throughout her life.
O’Connor is survived by three children.
