The White House may have successfully rebranded the Kennedy Center, but they forgot to check if the website was available.
Toby Morton, a writer for the legendary series South Park, revealed that he is the proud owner of trumpkennedycenter.org and trumpkennedycenter.com.
Morton didn’t wait for the official press release to act; he actually secured the domain names back in August. This was a full four months before Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the board had “voted unanimously” to officially change the name to Trump-Kennedy Center.
Morton’s move was fueled by his observation of the political landscape throughout 2025.
He told The Washington Post that his interest peaked when Trump began “gutting the Kennedy Center board earlier this year,” replacing long-standing members with a new wave of loyalists and appointing himself as the chair.
For the comedy writer, the writing was on the wall. “I thought, ‘Yep, that name’s going on the building,’ ” Morton shared, adding that “the rest followed on schedule.” He clearly saw the pivot toward personal branding coming from a mile away and decided to claim the digital real estate before the government could.
Snatching up political domains is actually a side hustle for Morton, who currently owns around 50 sites used to parody figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Nancy Mace.
While the administration hasn’t reached out to buy the URLs yet, Morton is already plotting his next move. He teased that the upcoming sites will be a masterclass in satire.
“It’ll absolutely reflect the absurdity of the moment. Lots of surprises. Some things are truly hard to parody, though,” he admitted.
He views the renaming as a shift away from the institution’s true purpose, stating, “The Kennedy Center has always been a cultural institution meant to outlast any one administration or personality. It’s meant to honor culture, not ego. Once it was treated like personal branding, satire became unavoidable.”
Despite the high profile nature of the takeover, Morton says he hasn’t been contacted by anyone close to Trump regarding a buyout.
He seems more than happy to hold onto the domains to make a point about the current state of cultural landmarks.
By staying one step ahead of the official announcement, Morton has ensured that the “Trump-Kennedy Center” will have a very different presence online than it does on its new gold lettered facade.
It’s a classic case of a writer finding the punchline before the story even broke, proving that in 2025, the internet is still the ultimate playground for a well timed troll.
