Southwest Airlines just hit customers with a major change, no more free checked bags.
Starting May 28, most passengers will have to pay to check their luggage, a move that’s got a lot of people side-eyeing the airline.
For years, Southwest set itself apart by letting two bags fly free, but now it’s falling in line with competitors like Delta, United, and American, who already charge around $35 per bag.
Southwest hasn’t confirmed their fee yet, but it’s expected to be similar.
The change came after Elliott Investment Management, a major investor, pressured the airline to increase profits. Now, unless you’re A-List Preferred, a credit card holder, or flying Business Select, expect to pay up for your bags.
Southwest is also rolling out a basic economy fare and changing how passengers earn Rapid Rewards points. Starting May 28, unused flight credits will also expire after one year, cutting off the open-ended flexibility on which Southwest once prided itself on.
Southwest built its brand on no baggage fees, and now that it’s gone, some customers feel like the airline is losing its charm. Would you still fly Southwest knowing you’ll have to pay for your bags now?
