Sports We’d Love to See in Future Olympic Game

With the Olympics reaching its conclusion, planning for the 2028 Games has already begun.

The next Olympics will take place in Los Angeles, California.  While there’s no sure way to know who will compete, one sport has already been axed for the upcoming event.  Breakdancing got off to a rocky start in Paris, and organizers have announced that it will not be returning.  While they have confirmed this exclusion was not due to the backlash over the performances and lack of diversity, many believe otherwise.  Nevertheless, fans can expect to witness many of the traditional competitions, such as gymnastics, basketball, swimming, and more.  However, it could be time for newer categories to make its way to the big Games.

The International Olympic Committee and the United States Olympics and Paralympics Committees recognized cheerleading in 2021 and 2023.  Still, the sport was excluded from the 2024 and 2028 Games.  Some outlets report that the complex scoring system and lack of global popularity are just two reasons organizers have opted to keep the category out of the lineup for the time being.

Another sport that would spark excitement is bowling.  Though never recognized by the Olympics, bowling is overseen by the International Bowling Federation.  This organization coordinates bowling events at the World Games, which showcase the best bowlers from around the globe.  However, all hope is not lost, as bowling is one of the most popular tournaments within the Special Olympics.

Chess is a highly skilled match, with world-renowned players from countless countries.  It has also been governed by the International Chess Federation for over 100 years, making it the prime challenge for the biggest names in the game.  Many of them already compete in the Chess Olympiad every two years. If the Olympics were to incorporate this event, it would serve as the organization’s first board game.

Pickleball is a racket sport similar to tennis, which is held at the Olympics.  For reasons unknown, pickleball has not been added to the lineup.  The sport is a blend of tennis and ping-pong, and while it has a large fanbase in the U.S., attracting global recognition may be a challenge. The World Pickleball Federation is holding out hope, though progress toward its inclusion could be faster.

Even though it takes time to add fresh material to the Olympics, the organization regularly looks at innovative methods to highlight gifted people.
