Starbucks has shut down a viral claim that accused one of its employees of insulting a customer by writing “loser” on a drink cup.
The controversy started after someone claimed they gave the name “Charlie Kirk” for their order, only to have the word “loser” written instead. Social media exploded with outrage, leading to calls for a Starbucks boycott.

But Starbucks is backing its barista with proof. The company says it reviewed time-stamped surveillance footage, which clearly shows the employee never wrote the word on the cup. Instead, the writing appeared after the drink was already handed off.
🚨 Quick update from Chicago: My MIL ordered Charlie Kirk’s favorite Starbucks drink (Mint Majesty + honey) — but the cup came back with “Loser” written on it.

Starbucks added that its policy strictly prohibits employees from adding offensive or political messages to orders. The footage, they say, confirms the barista followed the rules.
So while the viral claim sparked plenty of headlines, Starbucks says the “loser cup” moment didn’t come from its staff at all.
