Steph Curry has publicly dismissed Katt Williams’ claim that he played a role in shaping the NBA star’s legendary shooting ability.

In a recent episode of “Complex’s 360 With Speedy,” Curry addressed the circulating story and made it clear it isn’t true.
Host Speedy Morman broached the subject by asking, “In a lot of ways, we have Katt Williams to thank for your shooting ability?” Curry laughed but quickly corrected the narrative. “Shout out to Katt Williams, I’m a big fan. I’ve actually never met him.”
When Morman joked that it was odd never to have met someone who supposedly taught him everything, Curry responded bluntly: “The power of storytelling. I’m not saying that everything he says is fabricated, but that specific story: 100 percent never happened.”
Curry noted the claim even confused his relatives.
“He had my family calling me, ‘Yo, I didn’t know,’” he said, reiterating that Williams played no part in his basketball development. “I was an underrated like three-star recruit. There ain’t no way I’m getting paid to come somewhere to play in an All-Star game or like All-Star camp or whatever.”
He also mentioned he’s never seen Williams play basketball.
“I know he plays golf now, so that’s—I’ve seen that. I’d love to play golf with him at some point,” Curry said. “But yeah, I won’t be thanking Katt Williams in my retirement speech.”
Williams initially shared the story during a 2024 appearance on “Good One: A Podcast,” and recently repeated it on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast. He recalled meeting a young Curry at a charity event before his NBA career and offering him advice: “There’s no such thing as I’m not open, I’m always open.” Williams claimed that mindset helped shape Curry’s confidence as a shooter.
“Anybody that know me knows that I don’t claim s**t that I do,” Williams said. “But I am responsible for the greatest shooter in the NBA, without question.”
Curry respectfully disagreed. While he expressed admiration for Williams’ talent and humor, he firmly denied any connection between the comedian and his rise to NBA greatness.
