The shooting unfolded around 8:30 p.m. when the first officer arrived at the scene and was shot in the leg. As additional officers responded, three more were shot in quick succession, followed by another three officers who were injured during the hours-long standoff. Thankfully, all seven officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. SAPD later confirmed that six officers have been released from the hospital, while one remains hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities have not confirmed whether Poulos died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds or SAPD gunfire, but police found him dead inside the apartment after the standoff ended.
Court records show that Poulos had a history of violent behavior and legal troubles. On January 18, just days before the Stone Oak shooting, Poulos was arrested following a domestic violence incident where he assaulted three individuals. According to the police report, Poulos was intoxicated and attacked an 81-year-old woman, pushing her to the ground and causing her to hit her head. He also dragged a 44-year-old woman by her hair and struck an 83-year-old man multiple times. Poulos fled the scene in his car but later crashed and was taken into custody. He was charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member, two counts of injury to an elderly person, and a second-offense DWI. He was released on bond the following day and ordered not to possess firearms.
At the time of the Stone Oak shooting, Poulos had an active warrant for violating the terms of his bond and a protective order. Additionally, records show Poulos was previously arrested in 2013 for an assault incident in which he punched a man in the face during a fight while intoxicated.
The Stone Oak shooting began when police were called to the apartment complex for a report of a suicide-in-progress. Upon arrival, Poulos opened fire on the first officer and continued shooting as more officers arrived on the scene. After hours of being barricaded in the apartment, Poulos was found dead, although it remains unclear whether he died by suicide or police gunfire.
