A Texas teacher was arrested on Monday morning after she reportedly shot her son to death as she drove him to school.
Sarah Elizabeth Hunt, 39, an Elementary school teacher, was charged with murder in connection with Garrett Hunt, 17, McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara stated during a press conference.
Garrett was picked up by his mother from his father’s house earlier that morning, KWTX reports. It was during the drive of taking him to school that Sarah shot and killed her son.
After the shooting, Sarah reportedly walked into Riesel High. She allegedly told a pair of individuals that her son needed help and was “with her mother in heaven,” an affidavit stated.
“What have I done…this is not real,” Sarah reportedly said to the two people.
Shortly before 8 a.m., his body was found after a passerby noticed Hunt’s car parked on the side of the road. They immediately called Riesel Police. A motive for the shooting remains unknown.
“At this point, we don’t have a motive. We don’t know what happened. We don’t know what led up to this,” McNamara said. “It’s a big mystery, and that’s what we’re trying to determine. What caused this? We just don’t know at this point.”
When question by authorities, Sarah was “sobbing,” saying, “I didn’t mean to, I didn’t mean to.”
Members of the community who knew Garrett gathered to set up a donation bucket for funeral expenses.
“Garrett was a well-rounded young man. Very respectful and a hard worker. Those that knew him are very saddened at his sudden loss,” a Facebook post by The Tipsy Lion Bar & Grill restaurant.
Garrett was a student at Riesel High School. His mother was a first-year teacher at Lake Air Montessori Magnet School, where she taught fifth-grade social studies and science.
Sarah is currently in custody at McLennan County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
