On Thursday, former NFL star Terrell Owens appeared on the Nation’s CUOMO to discuss the allegations and legal proceedings of the Florida “Karen” who filed a false police report against him.
When asked if he was happy that she was being prosecuted, he said, “Yeah, absolutely, because if the roles were reversed, obviously, they would be going to the full extent of the law to charge me.”
Owens, who recorded most of the interaction with the woman, stated that many people of color share the same perspective.
“When you mentioned that you’re shocked,” Owens said. “For us, it’s not shocking. This is something that goes on every day, and thankfully, now things are being exposed, obviously due to social media, obviously mobile devices that are able to capture these types of moments.”
However, he did acknowledged that his status as a member of the Hall of Fame attracted attention to his experience that perhaps wouldn’t be given to others in a similar situation.
“It’s not about me,” Owens said. “I just think about others that may have been in this situation, and if they didn’t — like I said — have the status of or just the wherewithal to do what I did. Like I said, it could have been, obviously, gravely different…It doesn’t matter what type of neighborhood you’re in. This is the reality of the life of a Black individual, or a Black American.”
Earlier this summer, the ”Karen” in question claimed that Owens was speeding and almost hit her with his car and later threatened her.
Eventually the local police were called and they “resolved” the issue by separating the two parties before the situation got out of control.
A witness at the scene eventually testified that Owens was not speeding and had not threatened the woman as had previously been claimed, leading to the woman—identified as Caitlyn Davis—being charged with a misdemeanor for submitting a false police report.
