The shocking scene was captured in a video posted on Twitter, showing partygoers in the Oakland area of Pennsylvania enjoying the festivities.
As the footage pans to the right, the camera reveals a group of people hanging out on the porch roof before it suddenly gives way. In an instant, everyone crashes to the ground in what appears to be an almost surreal moment of chaos. The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear.
Sixteen individuals were injured, with three in serious condition and 13 others sustaining minor injuries. Pittsburgh Public Information Officer Emily Bourne shared with CBS News that the area was packed with University of Pittsburgh students when the roof gave way.
One student who was on the roof when it fell said he wasn’t aware of the dangers.
“I didn’t really feel like it was a risk,” he said to local news station KDKA.
Authorities say there were 300-500 students in attendance at the party to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, which is Monday. Despite the terrifying nature of the event, no fatalities were reported. Officer Bourne expressed relief that the outcome wasn’t more tragic, emphasizing that students should feel fortunate the situation didn’t escalate further.
