The Weeknd is washing his hands with The Grammy’s and is now committed to boycotting the award show after having his work overlooked.
In a statement on Thursday to the New York Times, the “Blinding Lights” star said that he nor his team would no longer submit his music to The Grammys after being snubbed at this year’s awards. Despite a strong 2020 with the release of his double-platinum album “After Hours,” The Weeknd was not nominated for any of this year’s categories.
“Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” The Weeknd told the Times. This is not his first time calling out the once acclaimed award committee. Back in November, he tweeted, “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency.”
The 31-year-old Canadian crooner is the latest Black musician to call out the Grammys over excluding their work from the nominations despite their music’s success. Drake, Wiz Khalifa, and Nicki Minaj have all expressed disdain for the Grammy’s lack of inclusion and recognition for Black acts.
The Recording Academy’s interim president, Harvey Mason Jr., responded to the backlash by saying that they would be taking a “hard look at how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review committees.”
