Tia Mowry is openly discussing the challenges she experienced while breastfeeding her children.
The 45-year-old actress, who is a mother of two, posted unfiltered photos to Instagram on Thursday. In the post, Mowry discussed her struggles with nursing and pumping.
“Since it’s National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, I wanted to share a little bit about my breastfeeding journey with y’all,” Mowry wrote in the caption of her post. “When I had Cree, I was struggling to breastfeed him. I was only able to breastfeed for three months before having to switch to formula.”
She then opened up about her second pregnancy, where she learned more about breastfeeding and gained extra support.
“During my second pregnancy, Instagram was around, and it was actually through here where I learned a lot more about breastfeeding, and also where I met a huge community of women who were all so supportive and encouraged me to continue on,” Mowry continued. “And during the second time, I found that I was able to breastfeed Cairo for 13 months.”
“Whenever I was traveling for work, I would pump extra milk so that she would have milk when I was away,” she explained. Mowry emphasized the toll it took on her, expressing that she was exhausted due to excessive work demands. During that period, she even experienced mastitis, a painful breast inflammation, and had to be hospitalized.
Nevertheless, Mowry is encouraging mothers who are struggling with breastfeeding.
“It is more than okay to feed your children formula. As long as your children are fed, loved, happy, and supported, that’s all that matters,” she said. “Sending my love and support all you superhero moms out there. You got this!”
