Actress Tia Mowry-Hardict gets real about her experience growing up with a white father and being married to a Black man.

The 40-year-old mother of two has on several occasions been open about her experience being a biracial woman in a world where race affects numerous areas of her life. Now, in a new blog, the actress explains what it’s been having a white father, and being married to her Black husband Corey Hardict. Mowry-Hardict started off the vlog explaining how her two parents met.

Her mother and father met in the 9th grade while in Miami; she mentions the two were from two different types of families. When her mother wanted to escape the hardships of racism in the south, she decided to secretly enlist in the army. Mowry-Hardict’s dad followed her mother to Texas, where they started their family. The actress says being biracial, she quickly understood what racism is and how it affects her. She said her mother was often a victim of racism and said she herself was the target of racial slurs like the n-word. But having a Black husband has shown her the world sees her family in different settings based on the fact.

“So my dad, I didn’t experience racism with him. But now I’m living in a household where my husband is Black. The racism I experience with him is mind-blowing. I had to learn how to adapt to seeing my husband get questioned about buying something very expensive. My husband was walking into a pharmacy, and he had on a backpack. And a security guard is questioning him and eyeing him down. I didn’t grow up with that sort of behavior living with a male figure.” The actress says she’s even began discussing race with her son Cree.

Thoughts? When did you talk to your children about race?
