Tinder is giving users a new feature that allows users to have a background check performed on a Match.
As part of its recent investment in background check nonprofit Garbo, Match Group, Tinder will now have the option to background check someone as an option for users starting today.
“We know that the biggest indicator of future abuse or violence is a history of these types of behaviors. Whether it’s online dating or the dozens of other ways we meet strangers in today’s digital age, we should know if we’re potentially putting our safety at risk,” says Kathryn Kosmides, founder of Garbo. “We want to protect those most vulnerable to experiencing harm both online and offline and this is just the first step in delivering on our mission to help proactively prevent harm in the digital age.”

Each Tinder user will get two free background searches. After that, background checks will be $2.50 each, plus a transaction fee. The background check option can be found through the in-app safety center, Tech Crunch reports.
When a user wants to have a background check done on someone, Garbo says a user should only need the Match’s first name and phone number to get started. If Garbo can’t find the person based on the initial information provided, it will ask for more information. The feature has the ability to provide a user with a Match’s history of violence, and it will direct people to mental health services.
Tinder told TechCrunch that the company will remove any accounts that have been reported for violent crimes.
