Kendrick Lamar is revamping his classic To Pimp a Butterfly album with the help of Gucci.
Lamar’s award-winning third studio album remains one of the most notable projects in hip-hop. The project won Best Rap Album at the 58th Grammy Awards, and now, the platinum-selling album will now be re-introduced to the world with a luxury spin. Working with the luxury fashion house and Los Angeles-based artist Lauren Halsey, the new version of the album will be available in vinyl with an all-new cover.Â
Halsey, who focuses heavily on creating pieces motivated by people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community, reworked the cover using giclée, a type of fine arts print. The front appears as gray bricks with remnants of a neighborhood mixed in. A braid shop sign and miscellaneous scribble across the bricks are meant to capture the elements of the street art in Compton, where Lamar grew up. The limited-edition double LP is wrapped in a tan linen vinyl jacket with custom wrapping designed by Gucci. While To Pimp a Butterfly has been transformed to vinyl version, this is the first time Gucci has had a hand in it.
Fans wanting to get their hands on this collector’s item will have to fork over $2,500. However, it is for a good cause. All profits will go directly to the Iovine and Young Foundation, which benefits upcoming entrepreneurs and innovators. Only 100 copies will be sold on the official Interscope Records website in the near future.Â
