Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is turning up the heat on California officials with a series of tweets calling for the immediate review—and possible overturn—of rapper Tory Lanez’s conviction. Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for allegedly shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, is now at the center of a growing debate over race, forensic errors, and due process.
The Florida congresswoman claims she has “compelling evidence” that proves Lanez’s innocence and says it will be made public within 36 hours. She’s warning that those responsible for pushing what she calls false information should be held accountable.
Luna says she recently spoke directly with Lanez in prison and revealed he’s been stabbed multiple times behind bars, but remains determined to clear his name.
Lanez has already filed multiple legal challenges, including direct appeals and habeas petitions. Luna noted that the California Court of Appeals has consolidated his filings and that oral arguments are on the horizon. She insists the case is far from over.
One of the most explosive claims centers on the forensic evidence. Luna highlights that Lanez’s DNA was virtually absent from the firearm and magazine used in the incident. There were no fingerprints tying him to the weapon, and DNA tests revealed material from four individuals—none of which conclusively identified Lanez as the primary contributor. She also pointed out that gunshot residue tests weren’t administered to other individuals who may have handled the firearm.
Adding more complexity, Luna said newly surfaced bodycam and medical records show Megan Thee Stallion originally told officers she had stepped on glass. Hospital X-rays reportedly revealed no bullet fragments, and the evidence allegedly removed is now missing.
Luna also criticized the handling of key witnesses, saying some gave contradictory accounts or recanted under oath. One witness reportedly admitted in court that she lied during an interview with the District Attorney. Another claimed that someone else had confessed to firing the weapon.
From a legal standpoint, Luna is pushing for a full case review under California’s Racial Justice Act, as well as new laws that limit the use of rap lyrics and personal character attacks in trials. She says Lanez’s sentencing was heavily influenced by a firearm enhancement law that disproportionately affects Black defendants—citing stats showing a 92% higher rate for Black individuals.
Constitutional issues are also on the table. Luna flagged concerns under the First Amendment (due to the use of Lanez’s lyrics as evidence), Sixth Amendment (right to face accusers), and Fourteenth Amendment (racial discrimination in sentencing).
In her most direct appeal yet, Luna called on California Governor Gavin Newsom to intervene and review the case, saying Lanez “deserves a fair hearing—and if justice prevails, he deserves his freedom.”
