Tragedy has struck Albany State University, leaving one person dead and others injured following a devastating shooting on East Campus during what should have been a joyful homecoming weekend.
The heartbreaking incident unfolded at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, October 19th, leaving the campus community in shock and mourning. The details, such as the motive surrounding the shooting, remain unclear, but the sense of grief and sorrow is palpable. In a statement, Interim President Lawrence M. Drake II expressed the deep sadness felt across the university.
“As always, the safety and security of our ASU students, faculty, and staff are the number one priority of this institution,” Drake said. “We have been informed that six individuals have sustained injuries. Sadly, one has been reported deceased.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), along with state and local agencies, is leading the investigation as the community awaits answers. Dougherty County Corner Michael Fowler has identified the deceased as 19-year-old De-Morion Tayshawn Daniels of Atlanta. He passed away at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. It’s unknown if he was the target or caught in the crossfire. Officials have also not confirmed whether or not he was a student at the school. The condition of the other victims remains unknown.
Counseling and other emotional resources have been made available to students who are reeling from this shocking loss.
