Travis Hunter deactivated his social media accounts, including Instagram, as a response to the ongoing scrutiny of his relationship with fiancée Leanna Lenee.
This decision came amid mounting criticism and invasive speculation about their personal life. Hunter expressed his frustration in a Twitch stream before the move to close down his social media accounts. He emphasized how exhausting it was for others to constantly weigh in on his relationship.
“I know what I got,” Hunter said. “My girl been with me for five years now. Y’all are just starting to talk about me and just now starting to be with me. Come on, man.”
Hunter revealed that Lenee had been emotionally affected by the criticism, even crying, and drinking due to the overwhelming comments. The controversy escalated when old footage resurfaced, showing Lenee in a music video with her ex, a rapper from three years ago, alongside direct messages exchanged with an individual. This led to a cascade of opinions from celebrities and athletes, with many voicing their thoughts on social media.
The backlash and invasive attention on his personal life ultimately prompted Hunter to deactivate his Instagram account, seeking relief from the distraction and negative commentary surrounding his relationship. As he prepares for the Alamo Bowl, where he will face BYU in his final college game, Hunter is focused on his career, despite the ongoing noise from outsiders.
Hunter’s close friend and quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, also took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend him. Sanders tweeted: “All y’all athletes, entertainers, artists, etc if y’all genuine trying to holla at trav y’all know how to get in touch with him or someone around. At this point, y’all just posting for the algorithm trying to look cool.”

While multiple athletes have taken sides in the matter, the central issue remains that Hunter’s relationship should not be the subject of public commentary or gossip. It has become a source of clickbait for media outlets, distracting from Hunter’s achievements, including his Heisman trophy win, and his final days as a college athlete before preparing for the draft.
Hunter, who should be celebrating his success and focusing on his future, is instead drained by the constant opinions surrounding his personal life. Grace and respect should be afforded to his choices, and regardless of the outside noise, Hunter will continue to live his life on his terms.
