After seven seasons and six years on the air, the fictional universe based on “The Southern Vampire Mysteries” novels by Charlaine Harris may be reproduced in musical form, according to “True Blood” creator Alan Ball.
Over the weekend, Ball spoke at the Vulture Festival in celebration of the 10th-anniversary screening of the pilot episode of “True Blood,” which aired September 7, 2008. During his speech, Ball opened up about rumors of a musical version coming from composer Nathan Barr, who, according to Deadline, Ball heard to be “pretty good.”
“It tells the story of vampires coming out of the closet,” Ball said of the project, which was first announced back in 2014. “Ultimately it really departs from the book, because people aren’t ready, and they’re too bigoted, and they end up going back into the closet.”
As he continued, he revealed the project is currently in the works, just before he paid tribute to the late Nelsan Ellis, who was best known for his portrayal of Lafayette Reynolds in the HBO series.
“That breaks my heart,” Ball said, as he sighed at the first sight of Ellis on screen. “He was so amazingly talented.”
