Donald Trump is ramping up his crackdown on immigration, and this time, he’s setting his sights on Haitian migrants.
Trump is working to revoke protections for about 500,000 Haitians who currently reside in the U.S. under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program. This move could pave the way for mass deportations, significantly impacting Haitian communities across the country.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defended the decision, claiming the TPS program has been “abused and exploited” for years. A DHS spokesperson stated, “We are returning integrity to the TPS system, which has been misused by illegal aliens for decades. President Trump and Secretary Noem are ensuring that TPS remains what it was intended to be—temporary.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has moved to scale back TPS protections. Back in January, his team revoked an extension that would have allowed Venezuelan migrants to stay in the U.S. until fall 2026. As a result, thousands of Venezuelans could face deportation as early as April.
The Haitian communities across the U.S., including large populations in Florida and Ohio, are bracing for the potential fallout. Many have built lives, families, and careers in the U.S. under the TPS program.
