Donald Trump is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to undo a jury’s decision that found him responsible for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. The request follows two courtroom defeats that left Trump owing a total of $88.3 million in damages.
The first jury, in 2023, found Trump liable for attacking Carroll in the 1990s and then damaging her reputation by publicly denying her claims. A second trial increased the financial hit significantly.
Now, Trump’s legal team wants the Supreme Court to review what they call unfair rulings that allowed damaging evidence — including the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape and other women’s accusations — to be shown to the jury. They argue these elements prejudiced the case beyond repair.
While a lower appeals court dismissed these objections earlier this year, Trump’s lawyers believe the Supreme Court should weigh in on what they describe as legal inconsistencies that could impact future cases.
The court has not said if it will take up the case, but a private conference is expected later this term.
