We now know more about how Trump plans to spend the massive payout from YouTube.
YouTube has agreed to a $24.5 million settlement in a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump, ending a dispute over the suspension of his account following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The bulk of the settlement, $22 million to be exact, will be directed to the Trust for the National Mall, the nonprofit overseeing funding for the White House State Ballroom.
Trump first announced plans for the privately funded, 90,000-square-foot ballroom in July. The venue will be located in the East Wing of the White House and is designed to accommodate 650 guests. Construction is expected to be completed before the end of Trump’s potential term in early 2029.
The remaining portion of the settlement will benefit other plaintiffs in the case, including the American Conservative Union. The funding from YouTube provides a substantial boost to efforts to complete the $200 million ballroom project.
Trump’s account on YouTube was suspended on January 12, 2021, and remained inactive for nearly two years. The platform reinstated his account on March 17, 2023, shortly after he launched his 2024 presidential campaign.
YouTube is the last major social media company to settle a lawsuit brought by Trump over Capitol riot-related bans.
Earlier this year, Meta and X reached similar settlements for $25 million and $10 million, respectively.
