Houston’s famed Turkey Leg Hut, once a culinary hotspot attracting celebrities and food enthusiasts alike, is now the subject of a forthcoming documentary titled “The Rise and Fall of The Turkey Leg Hut.”
Produced by Hillionaire Productions, the film aims to delve into the restaurant’s rapid ascent and the series of controversies that led to its closure in November 2024.
Founded in 2015 by Nakia Holmes and Lynn Price, Turkey Leg Hut began as a modest food stand outside the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Its unique take on smoked turkey legs quickly garnered a massive following, leading to a brick-and-mortar establishment on Almeda Road. The restaurant became a cultural landmark, frequented by celebrities and locals alike.
However, success was accompanied by a slew of legal and personal issues. The restaurant faced lawsuits over unpaid debts, a controversial dress code policy, and health code violations. The personal relationship between Holmes and Price also deteriorated, culminating in a public divorce and business disputes. Price’s legal troubles escalated with federal arson charges related to a 2020 fire at Bar 5015, owned by a former associate. Additionally, allegations surfaced that the restaurant was used to distribute marijuana, with drugs reportedly sold in bags branded with the Turkey Leg Hut logo.
Producer Jami McCoy-Lankford emphasizes that the documentary will present a balanced narrative, featuring interviews with Holmes, Price (currently in federal custody), former employees, and other key figures. The film seeks to provide an unflinching look at the factors that contributed to the restaurant’s downfall.
“The Rise and Fall of The Turkey Leg Hut” is slated for release in August on a major streaming platform, promising to offer viewers an in-depth exploration of one of Houston’s most talked-about establishments.
