Two inmates at the only state prison for women in New Jersey are pregnant after having sex with a transgender inmate.
The Department of Corrections told NJ.com that the anonymous inmates at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility became pregnant after having “consensual sexual relationships with another incarcerated person.”
New Jersey passed a law in 2021 allowing inmates to be confined according to their desired gender identity. The policy was approved as part of a settlement in a civil rights suit brought by a woman who had spent 18 months in a men’s prison.
Over 800 inmates, including 27 trans women, are housed in the Jersey correctional facility. The correctional facility does not require transgender women to undergo gender reassignment surgery in order to be housed there.
