A 2-year-old boy was abandoned outside of a Mississippi Goodwill with only a note in hand.
“Child abandoned… no phone number for mom,” read a note left with a 2-year-old boy who was abandoned outside a Goodwill in Southaven, Mississippi. According to police, the child had a plastic bag with a change of clothes along with the note.
On Monday, the Southaven Police Department announced that it identified and arrested a person connected to the case in Memphis, Tennessee. Surveillance footage captured a man and a woman driving a red vehicle when the boy was left. The man dropped the child off and then walked away, according to police.
“At this time the investigation is still on going, no suspect information or charges are being released,” the department said in a Facebook post, adding that it would not be giving out any other details for the moment.
Police said the child was dropped off just before 10 a.m. on Monday. The boy wasn’t able to tell authorities the names of his parents or any other family members, NBC News reports.
A Goodwill employee told local news station WREG that the man walked up to him and told him that he and the child’s mother could no longer care for the boy and then left, NBC reports. The boy was taken to the police station, and authorities contacted Child Protective Services.
Goodwill responded to the abandoned child in a statement. “Goodwill learned that a two-year-old child was left at a Goodwill attended donation center. The child was accompanied by an adult who dropped the child off. The safety of the child is our top priority, and we are very sorry to hear about the circumstances of this young child. Upon knowing the child’s circumstances, we immediately reported the situation to police. Our security leaders are working closely with local authorities, including reviewing surveillance footage. At this time, the matter is an ongoing investigation with the police.”
With help from the community, police were able to track down the parties involved. “We would like to thank all of the citizens who showed concern for the child, rest assured he is well, and being taken care of and will be reunited with family when CPS determines this is proper,” police chief Macon Moore said in a statement. “We would also like to thank all of the citizens who offered tips regarding the suspects in this case,” he added. “The cooperation from the community and a unified effort from law enforcement led to the speedy apprehension of suspects.”
Let’s pray this baby boy finds a loving home.
