Over 20 years ago, John Singleton released the coming-of-age cult classic film, Baby Boy. The popular movie featured a star-studded cast including, Tyrese, Taraji P. Henson, Omar Gooding, Snoop Dogg, Ving Rhames, and A.J. Johnson. The acting in the film was impeccable and earned a spot as a fan favorite amongst viewers. However, actor/singer Tyrese is opening up about his time working on the film with some of the cast members.
On a recent episode of the ‘Million Dollaz Worth of Game’ podcast, Tyrese sat down with the hosts and discussed the hit film where he played the role of Jody Summer. The actor shared that the movie was loosely based on his personal life, revealing that he grew up in a household that was similar to what was portrayed in the film. As a result, Ving Rhames’ character on set triggered Tyrese so badly that he still feels some type of way about him now.
“I was not acting in Baby Boy. That n*gga Ving Rhames definitely triggered the sh*t out of me. I don’t like the n*gga to this day,” Tyrese said. “I run into that n*gga to this day. I don’t give a f*ck where we at, what clothes we got on, what we doing, what event— it could be the Golden Globes— I see that n*gga across the room I be like, ‘Man, f*ck that n*gga back there.'”
He continued, “F*ck that n*gga. That triggered me. You lucky that one of the dudes your mama dated, you was cool with. I wasn’t with none of them. They came up in my crib, I was like ‘man, what the f*ck.'”
Elsewhere in the interview, Tyrese also revealed that Singleton previously compared him to the late rapper, Tupac.
“John Singleton was like, ‘You the only n*gga that remind me of Pac,’” he said. “’Everybody out here want to be Pac. They getting tattoos trying to become Pac. They out here trying to rap and sound like Pac. They trying to be super thug like Pac, they getting Pac tattoos, they doing whatever.’”
