The United States women’s soccer team has been knocked out of the Women’s World Cup after losing to Sweden over a penalty shootout.
This marks the earliest Women’s World Cup exit for the U.S. team and likely legend Megan Rapinoe’s last game with the team. The 38-year-old announced her plan to retire after the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season in October.
The match came down to a penalty shot by Lina Hurtig, which USWNT goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher appeared to deflect. But video assistant referee showed the ball rolled back across the goal line, giving Sweden the 5-4 edge.
“We just lost the World Cup by a millimeter. That’s tough,” Naeher said. “I am proud of the fight of the team. We knew we hadn’t done our best in the group stage, and we wanted a complete team performance, and the team came out and played great.”
The U.S. team appeared stunned after the controversial call, while Sweden players rushed toward the goal to celebrate their win.
Following their win, Sweden advances to the quarterfinals.
