A mother is outraged after U.S. Marshals burst into her home and pointed a gun at her and her baby.
In an interview with WFLA, 22-year-old Kada Staples says she took a nap on Friday with her 3-month-old baby when armed U.S. Marshals bust into her Florida apartment and ordered her to come out. “We know he’s in there,” she says the officials said, WFLA reports.
Staples’ camera footage from her doorbell shows two agents stopping at her door after seeing she’s the person who lives there.
“And they started screaming at me, ‘U.S. Marshals, open up, we know he’s in there,’ yelling to come out,” Staples explained. “And I just kind of started freaking out, so I’m trying to hurry up and put my dog away in his cage.” After that, the Marshals pushed her aside while holding them at gunpoint, the woman says.
The footage shows the mother in tears as she stands outside her apartment. Marshals were looking for Shamar Johnson, and Staples’ residence was a “target of the investigation,” and marshals “did not make entry,” read a statement from the Marshals. It, however, did not include an apology for the mistake.
“No sorry, no nothing,” Staples told WFLA. “They tell me, ‘You’re good,’ and another one said, ‘You’re fine.’” Staples added: “They did come back an hour later and said, ‘We just want to explain to you that we saw a black male run upstairs and we thought he came to your apartment, but he didn’t go to your apartment, and it turns out it wasn’t the black man we were looking [for],’” Staples told WFTS.
Staples says the entire ordeal has caused her to have trouble sleeping. “I think it happens more than people know, and it can happen to absolutely anybody,” Staples said.
