Venus Williams has joined her sister in withdrawing from the U.S. Open.
This will be the first time since 2003 that the Williams sisters both won’t participate in the Grand Slam tournament. Venus, like her sister, is reportedly dealing with a leg injury. In June, Serena suffered an injury to her right hamstring during the first set of her first-round match at Wimbledon.
Venus spoke out about the matter online, saying, “Having some issues with my leg all this summer and just couldn’t work through it.”
She continued her caption: “It’s still going to be a great U.S. Open, and many thanks to the @ usta for the wild card. I was looking forward to a great U.S. Open, but it was not meant to be this year. I will be back as soon as I can…And…clearly, I am still undatable! Thanks, Coach @ erichechtman, for being a good sport! And needless to say, I will be spending every moment of my free time rehabbing my leg so I can get back to the courts ASAP. In fact, I’m literally in the gym right now! God speed!”
Venus’ first Grand Slam competition was at the 1997 French Open. So far, Venus has won seven Grand Slam singles titles.
Get well soon, Venus!
