Earlier this month, Florida Commissioner Michael Dunn shot and killed a man he suspected of shoplifting from a military supply store that he co-owns.
Now, authorities have released video footage from the incident and it’s raising a few questions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the video, which is 7 minutes long, 50-year-old Christobal Lopez can be seen attempting to leave the Vet Army Navy Surplus store with something in his hand. At this time, Dunn approaches him with a gun. Dunn can then be seen grabbing Lopez by the shirt and firing his weapon from point blank range.
Lopez was pronounced dead on arrival. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The incident comes as Floridian’s debate over the controversial “Stand Your Ground” Law. The law states that a person can use deadly force “if the person reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to defend himself or herself or another against such other’s imminent use of unlawful force.”
Local officials are currently investigating the shooting.
“Please understand this is an ongoing criminal investigation,” Chief Larry Giddens said in a statement. “Until the investigation is complete, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
