Gunfire erupted Friday night in Virginia Beach, Virginia, leaving two people dead and another eight injured.
Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate said at least eight victims were discovered at the “original crime scene” after arriving in the area shortly after 11 p.m., CNN reports. During the course of their investigation, more shots were fired a block away.
The suspect in the second shooting was confronted by a Virginia Beach police officer and was shot and killed by the officer. Police said in a news brief that they are investigating the first shooting incident and the officer-involved shooting concurrently. It was not made clear in the VBPD statement if the suspect was responsible for the injured parties.
In total, eight people were taken to an area hospital with injuries ranging from serious to life-threatening. A woman died at the scene of the unrelated shooting that occurred nearby. A police officer was also injured and taken to the hospital after being struck by a car.
Several people are in custody, but no arrests have been made, and the shootings are still under investigation.
The police officer involved in the shooting has been put on administrative assignment pending the outcome of an investigation, which is the standard procedure, according to a press release from the department.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Virginia Beach Crime Solvers.
