Whitney Houston’s iconic breakout movie, “The Bodyguard,” will soon be reimagined.
Warner Bros is officially revamping the 1992 romantic thriller that paired Kevin Costner and Houston. According to Deadline, Sam Wrench, director of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” will lead the project, with a script from “Juror No. 2” writer Jonathan A. Abrams.
The announcement came Friday via Warner Bros’ co-film chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. No casting has been revealed, but following the original’s massive success, including $411 million at the global box office and two Oscar nominations, Hollywood’s top acts may turn out to audition.
“This should be a magnet for an exciting cast,” they said.
Originally directed by Mick Jackson and written by Lawrence Kasdan, the film followed Costner’s character Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron, played by Houston. The soundtrack also made history becoming the best-selling album by a female artist and included iconic tracks like “I Will Always Love You” and the Oscar-nominated “Run to You” and “I Have Nothing.”
This remake is part of Warner Bros’ broader revival strategy, with reboots of “The Matrix,” “Beetlejuice,” “Practical Magic,” and more underway.
