Wiz Khalifa Sentenced to 9 Months in Romanian Prison After Lighting Up Weed on Festival Stage

Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in a Romanian prison over marijuana possession. This sentence is now hanging in the balance as his legal team fights to overturn it.

This week, Romania’s Constanța Court of Appeal upheld a prosecutor’s request to impose jail time on the rapper, replacing an earlier punishment that only required him to pay a fine of about $700. The ruling means a prison sentence is officially on the table, although sources close to Wiz say he is actively appealing the decision, and no final outcome has been determined yet.

The case traces back to July 2024, when Wiz performed at the Beach Please! Festival in Costinești, a seaside resort town. During his set, he lit a joint onstage while dancing to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “The Next Episode.” Authorities arrested him shortly after the performance and briefly detained him before releasing him.

Initially, the incident was treated as a minor offense. A lower court fined Wiz instead of ordering jail time. That changed after Romania’s DIICOT prosecutors, a government office that handles serious crime cases, challenged the lighter punishment. They argued that Romanian drug laws are strict and apply equally to everyone, regardless of fame.

The appeals court sided with prosecutors, approving the nine-month sentence. Wiz’s team, however, is pushing back and exploring legal options that could reduce or dismiss the punishment.

Marijuana remains illegal in Romania, with tougher penalties than in many parts of the United States. The situation serves as a reminder that actions seen as normal in one country can carry serious consequences in another.
