Lil Kim for the people!
A woman has credited iconic rapper Lil’ Kim’s dance moves with helping her escape gunfire during a recent shooting at her Dothan, Alabama, apartment complex. Shariah Taylor says she avoided harm by busting out Lil Kim’s viral dance moves during the chaotic moment.
Speaking to WTVY, Taylor recounted the harrowing experience, “I hear pop, pop, pop, about 7 rounds. So I’m dodging, I’m ducking, I’m dodging, I’m ducking, I’m dodging, doing my Lil’ Kim. I’m trying to get my baby in the car, then I threw my baby in the backseat and we just sped off.”
The dance moves she referred to mimic Lil’ Kim’s famous pop-and-lock and bob-and-weave from the 1999 music video for “Quiet Storm” remix with Mobb Deep, which also resurfaced as a meme after the rapper repeated them at the 2019 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
Taylor’s comments, though lighthearted, come as the incident marks the second shooting at the complex in a month. In early April, a mother was shot through her window while in bed with her children at the same complex, although police believe the two incidents are unrelated.
Lieutenant Scott Owens, Public Information Officer with the Dothan Police, acknowledged the need for heightened security following the shootings. “Two separate shootings this close together gives us cause for concern,” Owens said. “Our patrol officers are going to more heavily saturate that area in the coming weeks to make sure we are as proactive as we can be.”
Despite Taylor’s quick thinking and escape, she still feels uneasy in her own home. “I’m kind of paranoid out here and I’m scared,” she told WTVY. “If you stay in Westgate Village, stay in your house. That’s all I’ve got to say.”
